Wallie Wolfgruber... is known for her stunning dancing, her passionate choreography, her impressive lineage (having danced for two of our fields important contemporary artists, Lar Lubovitch and Ohad Naharin) and her ability to attract highly talented performers to create with her. She is an insiders’ secret. When I think of her past work I recall intelligence coupled with provocation, vulnerability and maturity. Great stuff. There is something fascinating about Wolfgruber’s inner life that she attempts to share in her work.

As the festival slogan promised, I did find my new artistic crush which came in the form of Wallie Wolfgruber, choreographer and performer of Fürchtet Euch Nicht. Wolfgruber’s poise and grace as a dancer as well as her boldness as choreographer produced an emotional and sensual dance.

The very witty take on Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden "A Match Made in Heaven" then pairs the lovely Wallie Wolfgruber with Goldhuber, both wearing hilarious nude bodysuits (see picture). There is nothing remotely subtle in this piece, which makes it all the better. The obviously fake 12-foot snake and enormous candy-red apple lead the hapless couple to the sin of the big city and ultimately a fatal struggle over a rifle. Wolfgruber is such a pleasure to watch move, another excellent foil to Goldhuber's limited physicality.

The Club at La MaMa E.T.C. is an intimate little incubator of a space. It’s a good place to “hatch” as Wallie Wolfgruber and Friends did this week-end. Ms. Wolfgruber, a former Lar Lubovitch dancer, stood, knees pressed together and feet splayed, uncurling her torso in wonderfully delicate undulations to a Schubert piano sonata, performed live by Colin Huggins – not a bad way to enter this world.

“I accept and make the most out of whatever I am offered — in this case it’s seven minutes maximum, so that’s what I’ll do…” Wolfgruber commented. “Personally, if you give me an entire evening, I’ll take that too.”

...rose to principal roles within a year due to her excellence - Lar Lubovitch
Wallie is a breathtaking dancer and very inspired choreographer. Her body is not connected like the rest of ours, but every muscle leads straight to her heart. Her choreography is glorious, beautifully shaped and lyrically danced. We coulcn't stop raving. Valeria Vasilevski, playwright
